Girls Leadership, Empowerment, and Development (G-LEAD)

Girls in Sierra Leone face systemic challenges such as early marriage, lack of education, exploitation, and poverty. Many are denied opportunities to develop their talents and are left vulnerable to abuse or forced into harmful lifestyles. Our G-LEAD Program is the flagship initiative of GYCN, dedicated to empowering girls with leadership skills, self-confidence, and practical skills to achieve self-reliance. The long-term vision of G-LEAD is to establish a Vocational University in Sierra Leone that welcomes girls regardless of their academic background. This institution will offer certified vocational training that equips them for jobs, entrepreneurship, and leadership roles. Through G-LEAD, we are building a future where girls no longer feel forced into prostitution, early marriage, or dependency on men for survival. Instead, they will be leaders, creators, and contributors to national development. The program offers training in:

Catering and Cake Making

The G-LEAD Catering and Cake Making Class is an engaging and skill-building program that teaches young women the art and business of food preparation and presentation. Participants learn essential techniques in cake design, and event catering, combining creativity with practical culinary skills. Guided by professional mentors, students gain hands-on experience in planning menus, maintaining food safety, and decorating cakes for various occasions. The class emphasizes entrepreneurship, empowering girls in Freetown, Sierra Leone to turn their passion for baking and catering into sustainable career opportunities.

Make-Up Artistry

The G-LEAD Makeup Artistry Class empowers young women to explore their creativity and develop professional cosmetic skills through hands-on learning. Participants are trained in essential makeup techniques, including skincare preparation, color matching, contouring, and application for everyday and special occasions. Guided by experienced mentors, students learn not only the artistry of makeup but also the business aspects of the beauty industry—such as client communication, hygiene standards, and entrepreneurship. This program helps build confidence, creativity, and career readiness, inspiring girls to express themselves and pursue opportunities in the growing field of beauty and cosmetics.

Tailoring and Fashion Design

The G-LEAD Tailoring and Fashion Class is a hands-on training program designed to empower young women with valuable tailoring and design skills. Through guided mentorship, students learn the fundamentals of sewing, including fabric selection, pattern making, stitching, and garment finishing. The class provides a creative and supportive environment where participants can explore their talents, develop practical skills for entrepreneurship, and gain confidence in their craftsmanship. Led by experienced instructors, the program promotes leadership, innovation, and self-reliance—equipping girls with the tools to turn their creativity into opportunity.

Information Technology Digital Basics

The G-LEAD Internet Technology and Digital Basics Class introduces young women to the foundational skills needed to thrive in today’s digital world. Participants learn essential computer literacy, including typing, internet navigation, email communication, and software applications such as Microsoft Office and A.I. prompting. The class also covers topics like online safety, digital citizenship, and the responsible use of technology. Guided by knowledgeable mentors, students gain confidence in using digital tools for learning, communication, and career advancement. This program empowers girls in  to harness technology as a pathway to education, innovation, and future career success.

Wedding and Event Planning

The G-LEAD Wedding and Event Planning Class introduces students to the exciting world of professional event coordination, teaching them how to transform creative ideas into unforgettable experiences. Through hands-on activities, students learn the essentials of planning weddings, parties, and community events—from budgeting and venue selection to décor design, timelines, and client communication. The class emphasizes organization, creativity, and teamwork, giving participants the confidence to plan events with precision and flair. By the end of the program, students gain practical skills that prepare them for future roles in hospitality, event management, or entrepreneurial ventures.

Global Youth and Children's Network (GYCN) is a youth-led, non-profit organization established in 2021 by Abubakarr Mansaray and other passionate college students with limited resources and determination. GYCN focuses on education, empowerment, mentorship, and advocacy for less privileged children and young people, particularly girls.
